Tony Goacher : What support should I expect from a good franchisor?

One of the greatest benefits of investing in a franchise is that you are in business “for yourself, but not by yourself”. A critical part of your evaluation of potential franchise opportunities should therefore be to understand in detail, the nature and extent of the support that you will receive from your franchisor.


Tony Goacher is Franchise Sales Director for Driver Hire Nationwide. Prior to taking his current role, Tony spent three years as Driver Hire’s Area Development Manager for the South East, where he was responsible for assisting the healthy development of 20 franchisees, from the ‘old hands’ to new start-ups. This experience gives Tony a direct insight into the typical needs of a franchisee – both in terms of support and also in respecting the independence of professional business owners. Needless to say, every franchisee actually has a different set of needs! Tony is currently leading an internal review of Driver Hire’s own support mechanisms. As one of the UK’s longest-established franchise businesses, a regular finalist and a former winner of the bfa ‘Franchisor of the Year’ award, Driver Hire still recognises that as the world of business evolves, so must the support provided by a good franchisor.
